| Recently an increased number of cases of kennel cough have been diagnosed in northwest Kansas. Kennel cough is a highly contagious disease that affects dogs of all ages and breeds. This contagious cough is caused by a bacteria called Bordetella bronchiseptica. |
Where can my dog be exposed to kennel cough?
- dogs that socialize and come in contact with other dogs (for example)
- sitting patiently in the waiting room to see the Doctor (at the vet)
- having my nails and hair done at the doggie spa (at the groomers)
- having a restful night at the doggie hotel and resort (at the boarding house)
- learning my ABC’s, sit, stay & fetch (puppy and dog training classes)
- on a peaceful walk in the park as you run into “Lucky” from down the block
- on a Saturday of hunting with all the “Big Dogs”
- seeing the untamed dogs from down the alley or across the yard (stray dogs or coyotes)

What increases the chances my dog will get kennel cough?
- more exposure to other dogs (especially if other dogs are coughing)
- if your dog is unvaccinated
- if your dog is stressed, sick, older, pregnant or over-worked

|
What signs will I see if my dog gets kennel cough?
- dry hacky cough (may almost seem like trying to vomit)
- cough may end with production of foam or vomit
- coughs very easy when on a leash or collar
- possible fever and decreased appetite
- possible eye/nose discharge

|
What do I need to do if my dog shows the signs of kennel cough?
- separate from all other dogs to limit the spread of cough
- visit your veterinarian to assure that the cough is indeed due to Bordetella (kennel cough) and not some other health concern
- treatment of antibiotics and cough suppressants will help your dog feel better sooner
- the sooner your dog is not coughing the sooner he is not contagious to all his doggie friends.

|
How can I help protect my dog from getting kennel cough?
- exposure to kennel cough is everywhere and limiting your dogs chances for exposure is very difficult if not impossible.
- a once-a-year vaccination is the best way to protect your dog from kennel cough
