Canine Heartworm Disease |
| Heartworm disease is a potentially life threatening disease that is spread by the mosquito. Canine adult heartworms live in the heart and lungs of infected dogs causing damage to the heart muscle, which can lead to heart failure. | ||
Prevention vs. Treatment Prevention is much safer and easier than treating heartworm disease. A blood test is needed prior to starting prevention. A once-monthly tasty treat is essential for keeping your pet protected from the threat of heartworms. This monthly prevention also protects your pet from other parasites such as roundworms and hookworms. The American Heartworm Society recommends year-round monthly treats for the prevention of heartworm disease in dogs. |
Although heartworm disease is treatable, once your dog is exposed to heartworm positive mosquitoes, treatment is a very costly, painful and very lengthy procedure. Dogs undergoing treatment for heartworm diseased require hospitalization, a series of injection in the lumbar back muscles and a month of strict cage confinement. |
To any dog a once a month treat for prevention sounds a whole lot more fun than the treatment. |
